Constant-Power Performance and Plume Measurements of a Nested-Channel Hall-Effect Thruster
نویسندگان
چکیده
The X2 nested-channel Hall-effect thruster has been operated at constant discharge powers of 5 kW and 6 kW. Thrust measurements showed that improved performance over an extended range of specific impulse can be obtained by transitions between operating modes of the X2. The simultaneous operation of both channels provided the best performance at low specific impulse, where higher mass flow rates were necessary to maintain total power. The inner channel provided optimal performance at high specific impulse, while the outer channel was best suited for the intermediate-Isp region between the other two modes. Far-field RPA and E×B measurements were used to determine voltage utilization and charge utilization efficiencies during 6-kW operation. Discharge current measurements showed forms of interaction between discharge channels during simultaneous operation.

Far-Field Plume Measurements of a Nested-Channel Hall-Effect Thruster
Far-field plume measurements were performed on the X2 nested-channel Hall-effect thruster using a nude Faraday probe, retarding potential analyzer, and E×B probe. Data from these probes were used to examine the operating characteristics of the X2 with both channels operating simultaneously (dual-channel mode). For each operating condition in dual-channel mode, far-field measurements were also t...

The T-220HT Hall-effect thruster is modified to include in-channel electrodes and additional magnetic coils to study ion focusing. The goal of this work is to decrease energy losses from ion-wall neutralization and plume divergence to increase the thrust-to-power ratio. In this paper, thrust and plume measurements on xenon are presented. The thruster was tested from 125 to 300 V at 9 A discharg...
متن کاملTechnique to Collimate Ions in a Hall-Effect Thruster Discharge Chamber
High thrust-to-power ratio on Hall-effect thrusters allows for more efficient thrust generation and better overall performance. It allows Hall-effect thrusters to perform more thrust-intensive maneuvers such as orbit raising, thus saving the mass of a second engine purely for those maneuvers. This paper presents the initial performance measurements of aHall-effect thruster using in-channel elec...

متن کاملSingle-String Integration Test Measurements of the NEXT Ion Engine Plume
Measurements were made of a 40 cm ion-thruster plume as part of the single-string-integration-test (SSIT) activity of Phase I of the NASA’s Evolutionary Xenon Thruster (NEXT) project. The NEXT ion engine incorporates design improvements that extend NSTAR power levels and efficiencies. During SSIT, an engineering model (EM2) 40 cm engine was operated using an advanced xenon propellant system in ...
